The HIMSS10 Conference will proudly be hosting a series of ‘New Media’ events for those in the health IT industry that are actively using online social media and want to put a face to a few well known names.

About Cam Deemer:

As President of DrFirst, Mr. Deemer is responsible for driving the development, strategy and management of the company towards exponential growth and success. Mr. Deemer brings more than 12 years of healthcare industry experience to this position. He joined DrFirst in 2005 as the Director of Product Management and most recently served as the Senior Vice President and General Manager, where he managed the company’s tactical operations. Since joining DrFirst, Mr. Deemer has played an instrumental role in formalizing and driving improved business processes, while developing new technology strategies to leverage the benefits of e-prescribing for payers, hospitals, and health systems. He has also been a strong proponent of promoting interoperability in the eHealthcare industry by sharing prescription data between disparate systems. Prior to joining DrFirst in 2005, Mr. Deemer was Assistant Vice President of Product Management for PCS Health Systems/AdvancePCS and also led the e-prescribing and practice management product strategy for NDCHealth/Per Se (currently the RelayHealth division of McKesson).

“Anti-drug [abuse] advocates say Florida has become a magnet for pill buyers in part because it is the largest state in the nation without a prescription-monitoring program.”*

Over time, some clinical providers may note a rapid increase in the amount of a certain medications needed by a patient- which may indicate the development of a form of tolerance – or frequent requests for refills before the quantity prescribed should have been used. Some unethical patients and certain “Doctor Shoppers” have grown wise to that fact, so many have begun to seek analgesics and other selected drugs from multiple physicians. Continue Reading

Dr. Sullivan is a practicing cardiologist who joined DrFirst in 2004, just after completing his term as President of the Massachusetts Medical Society. He is known throughout the healthcare industry as the father of the Continuity of Care Record (“CCR”) and a leader on the future of healthcare technology. He is assisting DrFirst in ensuring that Rcopia continues to add the functionality necessary to maintain its leadership position both in electronic prescribing and in the channel of communication between various sectors of the healthcare community and the physician. Dr. Sullivan is active in organized medical groups at the state and national level, and is both a delegate to the AMA and the Chairperson of their Council on Medical Service as well as past Co-Chair of the Physicians EHR Consortium.

Perhaps you’ve heard of “Fill Status.” In 2006, it was tested as part of the AHRQ-funded e-prescribing study to be considered one of the “Initial E-Prescribing Standards.” This particular functionality allows a pharmacy system to send a message to an e-[rescribing or EHR system that the prescription was dispensed to the patient.

Fill status is an official standard, but even if you e-prescribe regularly; you’ve probably never seen it.

There are a couple of reasons it isn’t in common use yet.

The most obvious reason is that although several e-prescribing and EHR systems are capable of receiving and displaying these messages, almost no pharmacy systems are sending these messages yet.

About Peter Kaufman:

Schooled at MIT, Dr. Kaufman nurtured a strong interest in medical informatics while a Bowman Gray School of Medicine faculty member. After entering private practice he founded PiNK software in 1996 to produce EMR software, later becoming DrFirst’s chief medical officer upon its founding. He lectures nationally on various healthcare IT topics, and as a board certified gastroenterologist, he continues a limited clinical practice. Dr. Kaufman is a member of the Health IT Standards Committee, Privacy and Security Workgroup for ONC (Office of the National Coordinator for Healthcare Information Technology). Representing the American Gastroenterology Association’s (AGA), Dr. Kaufman is a delegate to the AMA and was the co-chair of the Physicians Electronic Health Record Consortium (PEHRC). He has participated on workgroups at CCHIT (stand-alone e-prescribing), HIMSS (e-prescribing), and NCPDP (e-prescribing).
